Huerquehue National Park is a pristine wilderness in Chile's Araucanía Region, celebrated for its ancient araucaria trees, turquoise lakes, and dramatic volcanic landscapes. Just a short drive from Pucón, this park offers a quieter alternative to the more crowded Conguillío, with excellent hiking through dense temperate rainforest and along ridgelines with panoramic views of the Andes. The park's name means 'place of the devil' in Mapuche, but you'll find it heavenly for its uncrowded trails and the chance to see the iconic monkey puzzle tree in its natural habitat.
Highlights & What to See
- Laguna Toro: A stunning emerald-green lake ringed by araucaria forest, reachable via a moderate 2-hour hike from the park entrance.
- Los Lagos Trail: The park's premier hike, a 9-km loop that passes several crystal-clear lakes including Lago Verde, Lago Chico, and Lago El Toro, with chances to spot the rare Darwin's frog.
- Araucaria Trees: These ancient, umbrella-shaped conifers are unique to the region; the park protects one of the best stands, with some trees over 1,000 years old.
- Mirador Lago Tinquilco: A viewpoint near the park entrance offering a postcard-perfect panorama of the lake and surrounding volcanoes, including Villarrica.
- Sendero Huerquehue: A shorter, family-friendly trail through old-growth forest alongside the Tinquilco River, leading to a small waterfall and picnic area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to Huerquehue to tackle the main Los Lagos loop (4–5 hours) and enjoy a picnic by one of the lakes. If you're short on time, a half-day is enough for the Laguna Toro hike and a stroll along Sendero Huerquehue. For photographers and botanists, an overnight stay at the park's campground or a nearby lodge allows for early-morning mist over the lakes and golden-hour light on the araucarias.
