Houbihu Fishing Harbor
Houbihu Fishing Harbor, tucked into a sheltered cove on the southern coast of Kenting National Park, is a working fishing port that offers a raw, salty slice of Taiwanese coastal life. The harbor is a jumble of colorful fishing boats, drying squid racks, and seafood stalls where you can watch the day’s catch being unloaded. The air smells of brine and grilled fish, and the constant clatter of boat engines and hawkers creates a lively, unpolished atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot for travelers who want to escape the resort crowds and experience a genuine fishing community.
Highlights & What to See
- Seafood Market & Grills: Wander past tanks of live crab, lobster, and grouper, then choose a stall to grill your selection on the spot. Squid skewers and fried milkfish are local favorites.
- Fishing Boat Dock: Watch fishermen mend nets and unload their haul, especially in the late afternoon. The colorful boats make great photo subjects against the turquoise water.
- Houbihu Coastal Trail: A short paved path hugs the cliff south of the harbor, offering panoramic views of the bay, the harbor, and the distant Eluanbi Lighthouse.
- Sunset from the Pier: The western-facing pier is a prime spot to watch the sun dip into the Taiwan Strait, with fishing boats silhouetted in the golden light.
- Squid Drying Racks: Near the market, long racks of squid drying in the sun create a striking visual and a pungent smell – a true taste of local food culture.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the harbor, eating, and walking the coastal trail. If you plan to buy and grill seafood, budget at least 90 minutes. The harbor is best visited in the late afternoon (around 3–5 PM) when the fishing boats return and the light is good for photos. You can easily combine it with a visit to Eluanbi Park or Longpan Park in a half-day loop.
