Hot Water Beach is one of New Zealand's most unusual natural attractions, located on the Coromandel Peninsula. Here you can dig your own hot pool in the sand, thanks to underground thermal springs that bubble up through the beach at low tide. It's a surreal and utterly relaxing experience – bring a spade, find a spot near the rocks at the southern end, and let the warm water soothe you as the Pacific surf rolls in. The beach itself is stunning, with golden sand and dramatic headlands, making it a must-do for any traveller exploring the North Island.
Highlights & What to See
- DIY Hot Pools: At low tide, dig a hole in the sand near the outcrop of rocks and watch it fill with naturally heated water (up to 64°C/147°F). It's a quirky, unforgettable experience.
- Cathedral Cove: A short drive or scenic walk away, this iconic sea cave and white-sand beach is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and photography.
- Hahei Beach: A gorgeous crescent of white sand with clear turquoise water, ideal for a relaxing swim or paddleboard.
- Te Pare Historic Reserve: A short walk from Hahei offers panoramic views of the coast and a Māori pā (fortified village) site.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2–3 hours to enjoy the hot pools and explore the beach. Time your visit around low tide – the pools are accessible for about two hours either side of low tide. If you want to combine it with Cathedral Cove and Hahei, set aside a full day. Many visitors base themselves in nearby Hahei or Whitianga and spend a relaxed day hopping between these coastal gems.
