Step beyond the skyscrapers of Kowloon into the New Territories, where Hong Kong’s rural soul survives in walled villages, wetlands, and misty mountain trails. This vast region—covering nearly 90% of Hong Kong’s land—offers a stark contrast to the city’s neon frenzy. Start your journey at the Hong Kong Museum of History in Tsim Sha Tsui (technically in Kowloon, but the perfect primer for the New Territories), where vivid dioramas trace the territory’s story from prehistoric times through the handover. Then head north to explore ancient Hakka villages, hike the MacLehose Trail, or take a sampan through the floating village of Tai O.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate a full day to the New Territories to truly absorb its contrasts. Start early at the Museum of History (2–3 hours), then head north by MTR or bus. In the afternoon, choose one or two highlights: a heritage trail like Ping Shan (1.5 hours) paired with a village lunch, or a hike in Plover Cove (half-day). If you’re short on time, combine the museum with a half-day trip to Tai O. For a deeper dive, consider an overnight stay at a rural guesthouse on Lantau or in Sai Kung.
