Hong Kong New Territories Big Buddha
Rising serenely above the wooded slopes of Lantau Island, the Tian Tan Buddha — better known as the Big Buddha — is one of Hong Kong's most iconic sights. This 34-metre-tall bronze statue sits atop a hill near the Po Lin Monastery, gazing out over the South China Sea. The journey to see it is as memorable as the statue itself: a scenic cable-car ride over the mountains and sea, or a winding bus climb through lush New Territories countryside. The area blends spiritual calm with spectacular nature, offering a rewarding day trip from the city's hustle.
Highlights & What to See
- Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) — Climb the 268 steps to stand at the feet of this majestic seated Buddha, one of the world's largest outdoor bronze statues. The views of Lantau and the surrounding islands are breathtaking.
- Po Lin Monastery — Just below the Buddha, this active Buddhist monastery features ornate halls, serene gardens, and a vegetarian restaurant where you can sample monastic cuisine.
- Ngong Ping Village — A purpose-built cultural village at the cable-car terminus, with shops, a tea house, and the 'Walking with Buddha' multimedia show.
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car — A 25-minute ride from Tung Chung offering panoramic views of the airport, mountains, and sea. Opt for the Crystal Cabin with a glass floor for an extra thrill.
