Big Wave Bay, on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, is a laid-back surfers' haven that feels a world away from the city's skyscrapers. This sheltered cove offers consistent swells, a relaxed beach vibe, and a surprising dose of ancient history. It's a perfect escape for travellers craving coastal air, a paddle in the sea, and a glimpse of Hong Kong's prehistoric past.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing & Swimming: The namesake waves are best in winter (November–March), but summer brings gentle swells ideal for beginners. Boards can be rented from the beachside shack. Outside surf season, the calm waters are perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Rock Carvings: A short walk from the beach, you'll find 3,000-year-old Bronze Age petroglyphs – geometric patterns etched into a boulder. It's a declared monument and a fascinating link to Hong Kong's earliest inhabitants.
- Shek O Country Trail: This scenic coastal hike connects Big Wave Bay to Shek O village (about 45 minutes). The trail offers sweeping views of the South China Sea, rocky headlands, and the chance to spot dragonflies and butterflies.
- Beachside Eateries: Grab a cold beer and fish and chips at one of the casual restaurants lining the sand. The vibe is unpretentious – think wooden tables, sea breezes, and the sound of waves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal. Arrive mid-morning to claim a spot on the sand, swim or surf for a couple of hours, then hike the Shek O Country Trail to Shek O for lunch. If you're not hiking, you can easily spend 3–4 hours lounging, swimming, and exploring the rock carvings. For a full-day trip, combine it with nearby Shek O village and its beach.
