Hong Kong's outlying islands offer a serene escape from the city's frenetic pace, with rugged coastlines, traditional fishing villages, and sweeping hiking trails. While the main island is a global hub of commerce and culture, these smaller islands—Lantau, Lamma, Cheung Chau, and others—reveal a slower, more authentic side of Hong Kong. Ferries depart regularly from Central, making island-hopping an easy day trip or a multi-day adventure into subtropical nature and local life.
Highlights & What to See
- Lantau Island – Home to the Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha), the Po Lin Monastery, and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car with stunning views over the South China Sea. The island also harbours the fishing village of Tai O, where stilt houses line the waterways.
- Lamma Island – A car-free haven with hiking trails connecting the villages of Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. Lamma is famous for its seafood restaurants and the scenic family walk to the Kamikaze Cave.
- Cheung Chau – A dumbbell-shaped island renowned for its annual Bun Festival, colourful temples, and sandy beaches like Tung Wan. Hire a bike to explore the narrow lanes and the ancient rock carvings.
- Peng Chau – A tiny, laid-back island with a rustic vibe, perfect for a half-day wander. Visit the Finger Hill viewpoint and the old porcelain factory ruins.
- Dragon's Back – Actually on Hong Kong Island, but often combined with island trips; this iconic urban hike offers panoramic views of Shek O and the South China Sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least a full day for Lantau to cover the Buddha, cable car, and Tai O. Lamma and Cheung Chau each make excellent half-day trips from Central, but you could easily spend a full day on one island, hiking and enjoying a leisurely seafood lunch. For a broader exploration, dedicate 3–4 days to visit two or three islands, mixing cultural sights with coastal walks. Ferries run frequently, so you can adapt your pace to the weather and your mood.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hong Kong Island – The start point for ferries; combine with Victoria Peak, the Mid-Levels Escalator, and the markets of Sheung Wan.
- Kowloon – Across Victoria Harbour, with the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Temple Street Night Market, and the Hong Kong Museum of History.
- Macau – A 1-hour ferry from Hong Kong; a former Portuguese colony with World Heritage architecture, casinos, and the Macau Tower.
- Shenzhen – Just over the border in mainland China; a modern metropolis with theme parks, shopping, and a completely different energy.
