Chai Wan, Hong Kong Island

Chai Wan, tucked at the eastern end of Hong Kong Island, offers a compelling blend of gritty urban life, unexpected green spaces, and waterfront tranquillity. Once a gritty industrial and residential district, it’s now home to a growing arts scene, excellent hiking trails, and some of the island’s most peaceful coastal walks. Far from the tourist crowds of Central, Chai Wan rewards curious travellers with authentic local markets, temple culture, and a refreshing dose of everyday Hong Kong.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is enough to explore Chai Wan’s core attractions, but combine it with a hike to Shek O or Big Wave Bay for a full day out. Start with the Law Uk Folk Museum and morning market, then hike the coastal trail (allow 2–3 hours) and finish with a swim or beer at Big Wave Bay. If you’re short on time, focus on the park and market, then catch the tram to Shau Kei Wan for more island vibes.
