The road is rough and progress can be slow; plan for 4–5 hours of driving between major towns. Many travellers spend a few days in Goroka and Mount Hagen to explore the surrounding villages and attend cultural shows if timing aligns. A full journey from Lae to the end of the highway near Tari can take two weeks.
