Guilderton is a sleepy coastal village at the mouth of the Moore River, just 90 minutes north of Perth. It’s the kind of place where the river meets the sea in a swirl of turquoise and white sand, and life slows to the rhythm of the tides. For travellers on a self-drive along the Indian Ocean Drive, it’s a perfect stop for swimming, kayaking, and soaking up a classic Western Australian beach holiday.
Highlights & What to See
- Moore River Estuary – A stunning natural lagoon where the river flows into the ocean. Swim in calm, protected waters or hire a kayak to explore the river’s sandy banks and paperbark-lined shores.
- Guilderton Beach – A long, unspoiled stretch of white sand that’s great for beachcombing and sunset strolls. The southern end is popular for fishing and surfing when conditions are right.
- Sand Dunes and 4WD Tracks – The massive dunes north of town are a playground for sandboarding and 4WD adventures. You can also walk the Ledge Point to Guilderton coastal trail for sweeping ocean views.
- Moore River Walk Trail – A short, easy walk through banksia woodland and along the riverbank, offering birdwatching and a chance to spot kangaroos at dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Guilderton is best enjoyed as a relaxed day trip from Perth or an overnight stop. If you’re just passing through, two to three hours allows time for a swim and a walk along the river. To truly unwind, stay a night or two – you can kayak the Moore River, climb the dunes, and enjoy a fish-and-chips dinner watching the sun sink into the ocean.
