Queensland’s Granite Belt Wine Region is a cool-climate surprise, a high-altitude plateau of ancient granite outcrops, national parks, and more than 50 wineries. About 2.5 hours south-west of Brisbane near the New South Wales border, this is the state’s premier wine destination, famed for its robust reds and crisp whites. Beyond the cellar doors, the region offers wildflower displays, quirky art galleries, and starry night skies that will make you want to linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting at Ballandean Estate – Queensland’s oldest winery (established 1928) still run by the Puglisi family; try their signature Shiraz and Verdelho.
- Granite Belt Brewery – a craft-beer pitstop with a sunny beer garden and locally brewed ales that pair perfectly with the region’s cheeses.
- Girraween National Park – hike among massive granite boulders and balancing rocks; the 4.8km Granite Arch Track leads to a natural arch and panoramic views.
- Stanthorpe’s art scene – browse the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and the quirky roadside sculptures scattered around town.
- Apple & berry picking – in season (summer-autumn), pick your own at local orchards like Sutton’s Juice Factory.
- Starry nights at the Granite Belt Observatory – the region’s dark skies are perfect for stargazing; join a public viewing session on weekends.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Granite Belt at least two full days to do it justice. Day one: explore Stanthorpe’s main street, visit a couple of wineries, and hike in Girraween. Day two: hit more cellar doors (try the lesser-known varietals like Fiano and Nebbiolo), pick some berries, and end with a long dinner at a vineyard restaurant. If you’re a wine enthusiast or hiker, add a third day to venture deeper into the national parks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tenterfield – just over the NSW border, this historic town has a lovely main street and the Tenterfield Saddler (made famous by Peter Allen).
- Boonoo Boonoo National Park – a short detour south for the dramatic Boonoo Boonoo Falls and a rainforest walk.
- Warwick – on the way from Brisbane, Warwick boasts the historic Warwick Court House and the annual rodeo.
- Border Ranges National Park – a longer drive east into subtropical rainforest with superb lookouts and birdwatching.
