Gorbeia Natural Park
Gorbeia Natural Park, the largest protected area in the Basque Country, is a rugged paradise of beech and oak forests, limestone peaks, and rolling green meadows. Dominated by the iconic Gorbeia summit (1,482 m), it’s a favourite for hikers, cyclists, and anyone craving authentic Basque nature far from the crowds. The park’s network of well-marked trails leads to hermitages, waterfalls, and limestone formations, while the surrounding villages offer hearty local cuisine and a glimpse into rural Basque life.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit of Gorbeia (Gorbeia Tontorra) – The classic hike to the park’s highest point, marked by a large wooden cross and offering panoramic views over the Basque Country and beyond. The route from Pagomakurre is the most popular.
- Itxina Karst Massif – A surreal limestone landscape riddled with caves, sinkholes, and deep gorges. The circular trail around the massif is a highlight for geology lovers and photographers.
- Ollerías de Gorbeia – Ruins of ancient iron forges and charcoal-burning platforms scattered through the forest, remnants of the area’s industrial past.
- San Juan de Gorbeia Hermitage – A tiny stone chapel perched on a hillside, often shrouded in mist, with a peaceful atmosphere and a nearby spring.
- Zubialde Waterfall – A 30-metre cascade hidden in a lush valley, accessible via a short but steep trail from the village of Sarria.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for griffon vultures, golden eagles, wild boar, and the elusive Basque mountain goat.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Gorbeia, hiking to the summit or exploring the Itxina massif. If you’re keen on multiple trails or want to linger in the meadows, a two-day stay allows you to tackle different routes and enjoy a picnic by a stream. The park is also a perfect half-day stop if you’re driving between Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz – just do the short loop from Pagomakurre to the hermitage and back.
