Googong Foreshores
Googong Foreshores is a sprawling nature reserve hugging the shores of Googong Dam, just southeast of Canberra. This off-the-beaten-path gem offers a peaceful escape into bushland and water views, perfect for a day of hiking, mountain biking, or picnicking. The reserve is a haven for birdlife and kangaroos, with well-maintained trails that wind through eucalypt forest and along the reservoir's edge. It’s a spot that feels wonderfully remote, yet is just a 15-minute drive from Queanbeyan.
Highlights & What to See
- Googong Dam Lookout: A short walk from the car park leads to panoramic views of the dam wall and the lake, with the Brindabella Ranges in the distance.
- London Bridge Arch: A striking natural limestone arch formation, accessible via a 2 km return walk. It’s one of the reserve’s most photogenic features.
- Mountain Bike Trails: The reserve boasts over 20 km of purpose-built singletrack trails, suitable for intermediate to advanced riders. The 'Googong Trails' are a local favourite.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, superb fairy-wrens, and the occasional gang-gang cockatoo. The foreshores are a critical habitat for many species.
- Swimming and Kayaking: In warmer months, designated swimming areas and boat ramps allow for refreshing dips and paddling on the dam’s clear waters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day exploring the trails and viewpoints. If you’re keen on mountain biking or a longer hike (such as the 10 km loop around the dam), plan for a full day. The reserve is best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and catch wildlife at their most active. Combine it with a picnic lunch at one of the shaded tables near the water.
