Gloucester National Park is a lush pocket of Gondwana rainforest in the Barrington Tops region of New South Wales. Centred on the mighty Gloucester River, this park offers a cool, green escape with spectacular waterfalls, ancient trees and excellent bushwalking. It's a World Heritage-listed site, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, and feels a world away from the coastal hustle.
Highlights & What to See
- Gloucester River & Gloucester Falls – Crystal-clear swimming holes and a dramatic waterfall that cascades over ancient rock. The walk to the falls is short but rewarding, with plenty of spots for a picnic.
- The Gloucester Tops Circuit – A 2.5 km loop through cool temperate rainforest, past moss-covered Antarctic beech trees and fern gullies. It's like stepping into a prehistoric world.
- Riverside Walking Track – An easy 1.5 km stroll along the river, perfect for spotting platypus at dawn or dusk. Keep your eyes peeled for lyrebirds and wallabies too.
- Mount Gloucester Lookout – A short but steep climb rewards you with panoramic views over the valley and beyond. Best in the late afternoon light.
- Camping by the River – The park has basic campsites right on the Gloucester River. Falling asleep to the sound of rushing water is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day sufficient to explore the main highlights – the Gloucester Falls walk, the Tops Circuit and a riverside picnic. If you're keen on hiking the longer trails (like the Gloucester River Walk to the falls), plan for a full day plus an overnight camp. For a relaxed visit, combine the short walks and a swim, allowing 3–4 hours. The park is compact and easy to navigate, so you won't waste time driving between sites.
