Freycinet National Park, on Tasmania’s east coast, is a showcase of dramatic coastal beauty. The iconic pink granite peaks of the Hazards frame pristine white beaches and turquoise bays, creating a landscape that feels almost impossibly perfect. Whether you’re hiking to Wineglass Bay, kayaking alongside dolphins, or simply soaking up the serenity, Freycinet delivers a quintessential Tasmanian wilderness experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Wineglass Bay Lookout – The classic hike to this viewpoint rewards with one of the world’s most photographed beaches. The 1-hour return walk is steep but manageable, and the vista of white sand curving into sapphire water is unforgettable.
- Wineglass Bay Beach – Descend from the lookout to sink your toes into soft sand and swim in crystal-clear waters. Combine with the Hazards Beach loop for a half-day circuit.
- Cape Tourville – A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to a lighthouse with panoramic views over the Freycinet Peninsula and out to the Tasman Sea. Prime spot for whale-watching (June–November).
- Friendly Beaches – Less crowded than Wineglass Bay, these sweeping sands offer solitude and excellent surfing conditions when the swell picks up.
- Freycinet Marine Farm – Tuck into fresh oysters, mussels, and abalone right on the water. A casual, delicious stop that captures the region’s seafood bounty.
- Coles Bay – The gateway village, with a laid-back vibe, good accommodation options, and kayak rentals for exploring the sheltered bays.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to tackle the major walks, enjoy a kayak or boat tour, and still have time for lazy beach moments. If you’re short on time, a full day can cover the Wineglass Bay lookout and a drive to Cape Tourville, but you’ll miss the deeper immersion. Plan at least one overnight to catch sunrise over the Hazards.
