Fitzroy Reef Lagoon is a pristine, turquoise-blue lagoon encircled by the coral cay of Fitzroy Reef, part of the southern Great Barrier Reef. Accessible only by boat, this sheltered marine sanctuary offers some of the most spectacular snorkelling and diving in the Capricorn-Caye group. With crystal-clear waters, abundant sea life, and a sense of utter seclusion, it’s a must for any reef explorer.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkel the lagoon’s coral gardens – swim among colourful hard and soft corals, giant clams, and schools of tropical fish in calm, shallow waters.
- Spot green and loggerhead turtles – the lagoon is a vital nesting ground; you’ll often see turtles gliding past or resting on the reef.
- Visit the historic Fitzroy Reef Lighthouse – a 1930s timber-framed lighthouse, one of the few remaining in Queensland, offering a glimpse into maritime history.
- Explore the coral cay’s walking track – a short trail reveals seabird colonies, pisonia forest, and panoramic views over the lagoon and surrounding reef.
- Dive the outer reef walls – just beyond the lagoon, drift dives along the reef edge reveal larger pelagics, rays, and occasional reef sharks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors arrive via day tours from Yeppoon or Great Keppel Island, spending 3–5 hours on the cay and in the lagoon. To truly appreciate the snorkelling and birdlife, aim for a full-day trip. For divers, liveaboard options or extended stays on Great Keppel allow for multiple dives. The lagoon is best visited during calm winter months (May–October) when visibility peaks.
