Deep in the rainforest-clad ranges of Queensland’s Pioneer Valley, Eungella National Park is a sanctuary of misty mountains, ancient trees, and one of Australia’s most enchanting wildlife encounters: wild platypuses. The name ‘Eungella’ means ‘Land of Cloud’ in the local Aboriginal language, and you’ll soon see why as mists roll through the canopy. This is a place for unhurried exploration, where the soundtrack is birdsong and the rustle of leaves, and the air smells of damp earth and eucalyptus.
Highlights & What to See
- Platypus spotting at Broken River – The park’s claim to fame. Head to the viewing platforms early morning or late afternoon for the best chance to see these shy monotremes swimming in the wild. Bring patience and binoculars.
- Rainforest walks – The Palm Grove Walking Track (1.2 km) leads you through towering piccabeen palms, while the longer Sky Window Circuit (6.4 km) offers panoramic views from the escarpment.
- Finch Hatton Gorge – A short drive from the main park, this lush gorge features swimming holes and the spectacular Araluen Cascades and Wheel of Fire waterfall.
- Birdwatching – Eungella is a hotspot for birdlife, including the rare Eungella honeyeater, noisy pitta, and kingfishers. Early morning walks are best.
- Canopy views – The Sky Window lookout and the nearby Eungella Dam lookout provide sweeping vistas over the valley and out to the coast on clear days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park’s core areas: a morning platypus watch at Broken River, followed by a rainforest walk, then an afternoon at Finch Hatton Gorge. If you can, stay overnight in the nearby township of Eungella or at the Broken River Mountain Resort – this gives you two prime platypus-viewing windows (dawn and dusk) and a chance to experience the park’s nocturnal wildlife, such as possums and owls. A half-day visit is possible but rushed; aim for at least 4–5 hours to soak in the atmosphere.
