Epi Island
Rugged and volcanic, Epi Island is one of Vanuatu's best-kept secrets — a place where traditional village life hums along beside active volcanoes, crater lakes, and world-class wreck diving. Far from the cruise-ship crowds, Epi rewards travellers who make the effort with genuine cultural encounters, empty beaches, and a palpable sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Lamen Bay – A picture-perfect arc of white sand where dugongs graze in the shallows; join a local-led snorkel tour to swim with these gentle giants.
- Mount Tavani & the Voui Crater Lake – A challenging but rewarding hike through rainforest to the island's highest point, with a startlingly blue volcanic lake and views across to Ambrym.
- SS President Coolidge wreck – While technically off neighbouring Santo, Epi-based operators run day trips to this legendary WWII dive site, one of the largest accessible wrecks in the world.
- Village homestays at Nikaura or Lamen – Sleep in a traditional nakamal, share kava with your hosts, and learn about custom gardening and weaving.
- Epi's east coast caves – Explore limestone caverns with freshwater pools, often used for local storytelling and ceremonies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Epi at least three full days to settle into its rhythm. Many visitors arrive by small plane from Port Vila or Santo; the airstrip at Valesdir is the main gateway. Day one is for settling into your homestay or bungalow and a gentle snorkel at Lamen Bay. Day two: tackle the Mount Tavani hike (start early, bring plenty of water). Day three: dive or take a boat trip to nearby islands or the Coolidge. If you have a fourth day, add a village walk or a kayak paddle along the mangrove-lined coast. Epi is not a whirlwind destination — it's a place to slow down and connect.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
