Dumaguete, the charming capital of Negros Oriental, is a laid-back university town that serves as a gateway to some of the Philippines' best natural attractions. Known as the 'City of Gentle People,' it offers a relaxed vibe with a lively boulevard, excellent diving opportunities, and easy access to marine sanctuaries and whale shark encounters. Its mix of Spanish colonial heritage, thriving café culture, and proximity to stunning islands makes it a perfect base for exploring the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least three to four days to experience Dumaguete and its surroundings. Spend your first day exploring the town itself—walk the boulevard, visit Silliman University, and sample the local cuisine at Sans Rival Bistro (try the silvanas). Dedicate a full day to Apo Island for snorkeling, and another to a whale shark trip or a dive at Dauin. If you have extra time, add a day for inland adventures in Valencia or a trip to nearby Cebu for the whale sharks. The pace here is unhurried, so don't over-schedule.
