Perched on the edge of the New England Escarpment, Dorrigo is a lush highland village that feels a world away from the coast. This is gateway to one of Australia's most accessible ancient rainforests, where you can walk beneath towering Antarctic beech and brush box trees, swim in crystal-clear waterfalls, and soak up the laid-back hilltop vibe. The town itself has a handful of heritage pubs and a famous weekly market, but the real draw is the wild, green beauty that surrounds it.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park & Skywalk – A must-do: the Skywalk is a cantilevered platform that floats you out over the rainforest canopy with heart-stopping views across the Bellinger Valley. Afterward, take the easy Wonga Walk to the base of Crystal Shower Falls, where you can walk behind the cascade.
- Dangar Falls – A 30-metre drop just north of town, with a swimming hole at the base. It's a perfect spot for a picnic or a cool dip on a warm day.
- Dorrigo Mountain & the Waterfall Way – The drive up or down the mountain from Bellingen is an attraction in itself, with hairpin bends and lookout points over the valley. It's part of the scenic Waterfall Way route.
- Dorrigo National Park Rainforest Centre – Start here for walking trail maps and background on the Gondwana Rainforests, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival – If you're passing through in October, this is one of Australia's best roots music events, held in the showground.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least half a day to explore the national park and the town. To really immerse yourself, plan a full day: spend the morning on the Skywalk and the longer Wonga Walk (about 2.5 hours return), then lunch at the pub or grab picnic supplies from the IGA. Afternoon is perfect for Dangar Falls and a wander through the town's heritage streets. If you're combining with Bellingen or Coffs Harbour, a day trip from either is feasible, but overnighting in Dorrigo lets you enjoy the misty mornings and starry nights.
