Doolin
Perched on the edge of the Burren and the Atlantic, Doolin is a tiny village that punches well above its weight. It’s the unofficial capital of traditional Irish music, with three pubs hosting nightly sessions that draw musicians from across the country. Beyond the music, Doolin is the launchpad for the Aran Islands and a gateway to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, making it an essential stop on any west-coast itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Traditional music sessions – McGann’s, McDermott’s and O’Connor’s pubs are legendary for spontaneous, world-class sessions. Arrive early for a seat and soak up the craic.
- Cliffs of Moher – Just a 10-minute drive south, these sheer 214-metre cliffs offer jaw-dropping views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay. Walk the coastal path from Doolin for a less crowded perspective.
- Doolin Cave – Home to the Great Stalactite, one of the longest free-hanging stalactites in the world. The guided tour is fascinating and a great rainy-day option.
- Ferry to the Aran Islands – Regular ferries from Doolin Pier whisk you to Inis Oírr and Inis Mór in under 40 minutes. Rent a bike and explore ancient stone forts and dramatic seascapes.
- The Burren – This unique karst landscape is a botanist’s dream, with rare wildflowers and Neolithic tombs. Drive the R480 road for a spectacular introduction.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal. Spend one day exploring the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, another taking a day trip to the Aran Islands, and an evening (or three) enjoying the pub sessions. If you’re short on time, a single overnight still allows for a cliff walk and a music session, but you’ll want to linger longer.
