Coomallo Nature Reserve is a hidden gem in Western Australia's northern wheatbelt, offering a pristine slice of wildflower country that explodes with colour in spring. This 13,000-hectare reserve protects one of the state's most significant orchid hotspots, with over 80 species recorded, many of which are rare or endemic. For nature lovers and self-drive explorers, it's a peaceful escape into ancient landscapes of granite outcrops, mallee scrub and sandy plains.
Highlights & What to See
- Wildflower Spectacle – From July to October, the reserve blazes with everlastings, orchids and grevilleas. Look for the rare Coomallo spider orchid and Queen of Sheba orchid.
- Granite Outcrops – Climb the low domes for panoramic views over the reserve and spot rock orchids clinging to the cracks.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for malleefowl, blue-breasted fairywrens and the striking regent parrot.
- Self-Drive Wildflower Trail – The reserve is crisscrossed by sandy tracks perfect for a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle; pick up a map from the Jurien Bay Visitor Centre.
- Photography – Early morning light on the granite outcrops and low-angle sun on the flowers create stunning shots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to explore the reserve properly. If you're a keen botanist or photographer, a full day is ideal. The reserve has no facilities, so pack water, food and fuel. Visit between August and October for the peak wildflower display, but note that the weather can be hot by mid-spring.
