Stretching from the shimmering coastline north of Noosa to the pristine waters of Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Great Sandy National Park is a raw, untamed slice of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. This vast park is a playground for nature lovers, where towering coloured sand cliffs, ancient rainforests, and wild surf beaches collide. It’s a place where you can drive on the beach, paddle up a tea-coloured river, and spot dingoes roaming among heathlands. For self-drive travellers, it’s an essential detour that feels a world away from the polished resorts further south.
Highlights & What to See
- Teewah Beach & Coloured Sands: Drive along the firm sand of Teewah Beach (4WD required) and marvel at the ochre-hued cliffs of the Coloured Sands, where layers of red, yellow, and white tell a 20,000-year-old story.
- Double Island Point: A striking headland with a historic lighthouse offering panoramic views of the coast. In winter, humpback whales are often spotted breaching offshore.
- Lake Freshwater & Lake Cootharaba: These serene lakes are perfect for kayaking, swimming, and birdwatching. Lake Cootharaba is the gateway to the Upper Noosa River, a paddler’s paradise through paperbark forests.
- Upper Noosa River Canoe Trail: Paddle through mirror-calm waters flanked by ancient melaleuca trees. It’s a magical, silent journey where you might see sea eagles and wallabies.
- Rainbow Beach: The namesake coloured sand dunes of Rainbow Beach are a photographer’s dream. Climb the Carlo Sand Blow for a surreal moonscape and sunset views.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the park’s diversity, plan at least two full days. One day for a 4WD beach drive from Noosa North Shore to Double Island Point, with stops for walks and swims; another for a canoe trip on the Upper Noosa River or a hike through the Cooloola Rainforest. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Noosa can cover Teewah Beach and a quick paddle on Lake Cootharaba, but you’ll miss the remote magic. Overnight camping at one of the beachfront or bush campsites is highly recommended to soak up the solitude.
