Coalseam Conservation Park, a pocket of wildflower wonderland in Western Australia's northern wheatbelt, offers a vivid collision of colour and history. Come in late winter and spring to see the park's famous carpets of everlastings – pink, white and yellow daisies that blanket the rolling hills. It's a place where the red earth meets brilliant blooms, and where the past whispers from old coal mines and Aboriginal sites.
Highlights & What to See
- Wildflower displays: From August to October, the park erupts with everlastings, orchids and wattle. The best viewing is along the loop drive and walking trails.
- Coalseam Lookout: A short walk leads to panoramic views over the Irwin River valley – stunning at sunset.
- Historic coal mine ruins: Explore remnants of the 1860s mine, including a brick chimney and old machinery, with interpretive signs.
- Aboriginal heritage: Look for grinding stones and scar trees along the river, evidence of long Indigenous use of the area.
- Birdwatching & wildlife: Keep an eye out for emus, kangaroos and a variety of birds such as honeyeaters and parrots.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is ample to soak up the park's highlights – drive the loop, take the short lookout walk, and picnic by the river. If you're a keen wildflower enthusiast or photographer, allow a full day to explore the trails at leisure. The park is best visited between August and October; outside this window the wildflowers are absent and the landscape is more subdued.
