Once the University of Canterbury's original home, the Christchurch Arts Centre is a vibrant hub of creativity housed in a stunning collection of Gothic Revival stone buildings. Following the 2010–2011 earthquakes, the complex underwent meticulous restoration, reopening in 2019 as a dynamic precinct for art, craft, food, and performance. Wander through cobbled laneways and courtyards, where artisan studios, galleries, pop-up markets, and cosy cafés spill out into the open air. It’s a place where Christchurch’s heritage meets its contemporary soul – and where you can easily while away half a day exploring.
Highlights & What to See
- Artisan Studios & Galleries: Watch glassblowers, jewellers, and potters at work in the restored workshops, then browse galleries showcasing local contemporary art.
- Rutherford’s Den: Step into the basement laboratory where Ernest Rutherford conducted early experiments – a fascinating dive into scientific history.
- The Great Hall: Admire the soaring timber roof and stained-glass windows of this magnificent venue, often hosting concerts and exhibitions.
