Once the University of Canterbury's original home, the Christchurch Arts Centre is a vibrant hub of creativity housed in a stunning collection of Gothic Revival stone buildings. Following the 2010–2011 earthquakes, the complex underwent meticulous restoration, reopening in 2019 as a dynamic precinct for art, craft, food, and performance. Wander through cobbled laneways and courtyards, where artisan studios, galleries, pop-up markets, and cosy cafés spill out into the open air. It’s a place where Christchurch’s heritage meets its contemporary soul – and where you can easily while away half a day exploring.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least two to three hours to explore the studios, galleries, and courtyards at a relaxed pace. If you plan to join a guided heritage tour or catch a performance, budget for a half-day. Pair it with a coffee break at one of the on-site cafés, and you’ll have a leisurely morning or afternoon.
