Celestun Biosphere Reserve
On the Yucatán Peninsula’s Gulf coast, Celestún Biosphere Reserve is a serene wetland sanctuary where mangroves, estuaries and white-sand beaches create a haven for wildlife – most famously the flamingos that paint the lagoon pink. This is a place for slow exploration by boat, kayak or foot, with a palpable sense of wildness and local fishing-village charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Flamingo-viewing boat tours – glide through the Ría Celestún estuary to see thousands of American flamingos feeding in the shallows; best at sunrise or late afternoon.
- Mangrove tunnels – navigate narrow channels lined with red and black mangroves, where crocodiles, turtles and howler monkeys lurk.
- Peténes (freshwater springs) – floating islands of vegetation where the water is crystal-clear and perfect for a cooling dip.
- Celestún town – a laid-back fishing village with simple seafood eateries serving fresh ceviche and fried fish.
- Birdwatching beyond flamingos – look for pelicans, herons, egrets, ospreys and the rare Yucatán wren.
- Beaches of Celestún – long, undeveloped stretches of sand where you can walk for miles with few footprints.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day here: a morning boat tour (2–3 hours), lunch in town, then an afternoon on the beach or a walk along the estuary. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or photographer, consider staying overnight in one of the small posadas to catch the golden hours. The reserve is compact enough to enjoy on a day trip from Mérida, but an overnight gives a more immersive experience.
