Cape York
Cape York is the northernmost tip of the Australian mainland, a vast and rugged wilderness that feels like the end of the earth. This remote region is a mecca for adventurers, with ancient rainforests, sweeping savannahs, and some of the world's most pristine beaches. It's a place where Indigenous culture runs deep, and the landscape is raw and untamed. Getting here is an expedition in itself, but the rewards are unparalleled: croc-filled rivers, birdlife in abundance, and a sense of isolation that's hard to find anywhere else.
Highlights & What to See
- Tip of Cape York (Pajinka) – Stand at the northernmost point of mainland Australia, where the Torres Strait meets the Coral Sea. The short walk through coastal heath to the sign is a rite of passage.
- Fruit Bat Falls & Eliot Falls – These cascading waterfalls in the Jardine River National Park form perfect natural swimming holes. The water is cool and clear, and the surrounding rainforest is lush.
- Cooktown – A historic town with a fascinating past as a gold rush port and the site of Captain Cook's 1770 landing. Visit the James Cook Museum and the scenic Grassy Hill lookout.
- Old Telegraph Track – A 4WD challenge through corrugated roads, creek crossings, and mud. It's the classic route from Bramwell Junction to the tip, passing through the iconic Gunshot Creek.
- Weipa – A mining town with stunning turquoise water and excellent fishing. Take a guided tour of the bauxite mine or simply relax on the beach at sunset.
- Indigenous Rock Art at Laura – The Quinkan rock art galleries near Laura are among the most significant in Australia, with some paintings dating back over 30,000 years. A guided tour is essential.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers allocate at least 10 to 14 days for a round trip from Cairns or Cooktown to the tip and back. This allows time to tackle the rough roads, make stops at key attractions, and enjoy the journey without rushing. If you're towing a camper or taking it slow, allow up to three weeks. A shorter 7-day itinerary is possible if you fly into Bamaga, but you'll miss the full overland experience. The dry season (May to October) is the only practical window; the wet season (November to April) brings impassable roads and extreme heat.
