Cape Brett Track
Cape Brett Track is a rugged and rewarding coastal hike on the Northland Peninsula, offering dramatic sea cliffs, historic sites, and sweeping ocean views. This multi-day tramp follows the Cape Brett Peninsula from the trailhead at the end of Rawhiti Road to the iconic Cape Brett Lighthouse, passing through pristine native bush, over open headlands, and along pristine beaches. It's a must for adventurous hikers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Brett Lighthouse: Perched on a dramatic headland, this historic lighthouse offers panoramic views of the Bay of Islands and the Pacific Ocean. It's the ultimate reward at the end of the track.
- Deep Water Cove (Te Tī): A stunning turquoise cove with a white-sand beach, perfect for a refreshing swim or snorkel. It's a popular stop for boat tours, but from the track you'll have it nearly to yourself.
- Historic Whaling Station Remains: Near the lighthouse, you can explore the ruins of a 19th-century whaling station, offering a glimpse into the area's maritime history.
- Abundant Birdlife: Keep an eye out for native birds like the North Island kaka, tui, and bellbird, as well as seabirds such as gannets and petrels soaring along the cliffs.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night skies from the DOC hut near the lighthouse are spectacular, especially during clear winter nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the Cape Brett Track as a 2-day/1-night tramp, covering about 16 km (10 miles) each way. Day one takes you from the trailhead to the Cape Brett Hut (booked through DOC), allowing time for side trips to Deep Water Cove. Day two is a shorter walk back, with time to explore the lighthouse and surrounding cliffs. Fit hikers can do it as a long day hike (8–10 hours), but an overnight stay lets you soak in the sunset and sunrise. Allow a full weekend if you want to explore nearby beaches and side tracks.
