Perched high in the Pyrenees at 1,560 metres, Candanchú is Spain’s oldest ski resort and a year-round base for alpine adventures. Just 2 kilometres from the French border and 30 minutes from Jaca, this compact village of stone chalets and ski-in/ski-out lodges offers direct access to the vast Astún–Candanchú ski area (over 100 km of pistes). In summer, the same lifts open up hiking trails into the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, while the nearby Canfranc International Railway Station – a monumental Art Deco ruin turned luxury hotel – adds a layer of history to any visit.
Highlights & What to See
- Ski the Astún–Candanchú domain – Over 100 km of groomed runs, from gentle beginner slopes to steep black pistes, with reliable snow cover from December to April.
- Hike to Ibón de Estanés – A stunning glacial lake just a few kilometres from the village, reachable via a moderate trail through pine forest and alpine meadows.
- Canfranc Railway Station – Explore the beautifully restored Beaux-Arts station, once Europe’s largest, now housing a luxury hotel and a railway museum.
- Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage site with dramatic canyons, waterfalls, and the Monte Perdido massif; trailheads are a short drive from Candanchú.
- Summer activities – Mountain biking, via ferrata, and horse riding are popular when the snow melts, and the village keeps a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a ski trip, allocate at least 3–4 days to explore the full Astún–Candanchú area and enjoy the après-ski scene. In summer, 2–3 days is enough for a couple of big hikes (e.g. Ibón de Estanés and a full day in Ordesa) plus a visit to Canfranc station. Candanchú works well as a stopover on a Pyrenees road trip – one night lets you hike and see the station, while two nights give you time for a full day on the trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Formigal – Another large ski resort, 40 minutes west, part of the same lift pass and offering different terrain.
- Huesca – An hour south, with a fine old town, the Museo de Huesca, and the striking San Pedro el Viejo monastery.
- Saint-Lary-Soulan – Across the border in France, about 90 minutes via the Bielsa tunnel, this resort has a lively village and the Cirque de Troumouse nearby.
