Set among rolling green hills about 40 minutes from Canberra, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) is one of only three facilities worldwide that form NASA's Deep Space Network. This is where humanity talks to its far-flung robotic explorers — from the Voyager probes now in interstellar space to rovers on Mars. The complex's iconic 70-metre dish antenna dominates the landscape, and the visitor centre offers a fascinating, family-friendly glimpse into space exploration. It’s a uniquely Australian experience that connects you directly to the cosmos.
Highlights & What to See
- Antenna Displays: Marvel at the 70-metre DSS-43 dish, the largest steerable antenna in the Southern Hemisphere, and get close to other dishes used for tracking missions.
- Visitor Centre Exhibits: Interactive displays explain how signals travel across billions of kilometres, with real-time data from active missions and a scale model of the solar system.
- Moon Rock and Space Artefacts: Touch a piece of the Moon brought back by Apollo 17, and see a replica of the Mars rover Curiosity.
- Guided Tours (limited): On select days, free guided tours take you into the operations room and out to the antenna pads — check the schedule in advance.
- Self-Guided Walk: A short walking track loops around the facility with interpretive signs explaining the history and science of deep-space communication.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours here. Start in the visitor centre to get context, then walk out to see the antennas. If you’re on a guided tour, allow an extra hour. The complex is open daily from 9am to 5pm (except Christmas Day) and admission is free. It’s best combined with a half-day trip from Canberra or as a stop en route to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve: Just 10 minutes further south, this reserve offers wildlife spotting (kangaroos, koalas, platypuses) and scenic bushwalking.
- Canberra (city centre): Explore the capital’s museums, galleries, and Parliament House — about a 40-minute drive east.
- Namatjira Drive: A scenic route through the Brindabella Ranges with lookouts and picnic spots, perfect for a self-drive loop.
- Lanyon Homestead: A historic 19th-century property with gardens and a café, located 15 minutes from the complex.
- Murrumbateman: A wine region 30 minutes north, with cellar doors and cool-climate wines — ideal for an afternoon tasting.
