Bylong Valley Way is one of New South Wales' most scenic and underrated drives, winding through the rugged Wollemi and Goulburn River national parks. This 140-kilometre route between Denman and Rylstone offers a serene escape into deep river gorges, sandstone escarpments, and eucalypt forests. Travellers will find minimal traffic, abundant wildlife, and a genuine sense of remoteness that rewards those with a spirit of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Wollemi National Park – Explore the dramatic sandstone cliffs and deep valleys of this vast wilderness, home to the prehistoric Wollemi Pine.
- Goulburn River National Park – Stop for a short walk to see the river carving through ancient rock formations; keep an eye out for kangaroos and wallabies.
- Bylong Valley Lookout – A must-stop viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the valley below, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
- Historic villages of Denman and Rylstone – Both towns have charming heritage architecture, local pubs, and cafes perfect for a break.
- Wildlife spotting – The road is a haven for birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles, and you might spot echidnas or wombats crossing the road.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day (3–4 hours) to drive the full route without stops, but a full day is recommended to truly soak in the scenery, take short walks, and enjoy a picnic. The road is mostly unsealed and can be rough in sections, so a 4WD is advisable after rain. Start early to catch the morning light and avoid driving after dusk when wildlife is most active.
