Boyne River Valley

Twisting through lush farmland and forested hills, the Boyne River Valley is one of the most picturesque regions in north-east New South Wales. A short drive inland from Port Macquarie, this valley offers a serene escape into rolling green pastures, historic hamlets, and a thriving food-and-wine scene centred on boutique producers. The pace here is slow and the air is fresh — perfect for a scenic self-drive, a leisurely picnic by the river, or a tasting tour at family-run vineyards and cheesemakers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers explore the Boyne River Valley as a half-day or full-day drive from Port Macquarie. To do it justice, allocate at least four to six hours, which allows for two winery stops, a browse in Wauchope, and a short walk at Boorganna or a quick look at Ellenborough Falls. If you’re keen on the maze or a longer bushwalk, turn it into a full day — pack a picnic or book lunch at Long Point Vineyard. The valley also works well as a relaxed overnight stop if you’re heading inland towards the New England region.
