Twisting through lush farmland and forested hills, the Boyne River Valley is one of the most picturesque regions in north-east New South Wales. A short drive inland from Port Macquarie, this valley offers a serene escape into rolling green pastures, historic hamlets, and a thriving food-and-wine scene centred on boutique producers. The pace here is slow and the air is fresh — perfect for a scenic self-drive, a leisurely picnic by the river, or a tasting tour at family-run vineyards and cheesemakers.
Highlights & What to See
- Bago Vineyards & Maze — sample award-winning wines and get lost (literally) in one of Australia’s largest hedge mazes; the hilltop views over the valley are spectacular.
- Long Point Vineyard & Art Gallery — a boutique cellar door set among olive groves, where you can taste handcrafted wines and browse contemporary local art.
- Wauchope — the valley’s main town, with a heritage main street, the Timbertown living-history museum, and the must-visit Wauchope Cheese & Fine Foods for artisan cheeses and local produce.
- Ellenborough Falls — a short detour east leads to this magnificent 160-metre single-drop waterfall, one of the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere; a boardwalk lookout offers dramatic views.
- Boorganna Nature Reserve — a pocket of ancient rainforest with walking trails through towering brush box and red cedar trees; look for lyrebirds and wallabies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers explore the Boyne River Valley as a half-day or full-day drive from Port Macquarie. To do it justice, allocate at least four to six hours, which allows for two winery stops, a browse in Wauchope, and a short walk at Boorganna or a quick look at Ellenborough Falls. If you’re keen on the maze or a longer bushwalk, turn it into a full day — pack a picnic or book lunch at Long Point Vineyard. The valley also works well as a relaxed overnight stop if you’re heading inland towards the New England region.
