Perched on a hillside above the city of Braga, Bom Jesus do Monte is one of Portugal’s most stunning pilgrimage sites. Famous for its magnificent baroque staircase, the sanctuary draws visitors with its spiritual atmosphere, intricate architecture, and sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage candidate and offers a serene escape from the city below.
Highlights & What to See
- The Staircase of the Five Senses – A zigzagging baroque stairway adorned with fountains, statues, and chapels representing the five senses. The climb is an experience in itself, but a funicular (one of the oldest in the world) can take you up for a small fee.
- The Sanctuary Church – A neoclassical church at the top, with a striking white façade and an interior filled with gilded woodwork and religious art.
- The Gardens and Park – Extensive, manicured grounds with peaceful paths, ponds, and viewpoints. Perfect for a leisurely stroll after visiting the church.
- The Funicular – A historic water-powered funicular that has been operating since 1882. It’s a charming ride and a great alternative to walking the stairs.
- Sunset Views – The terrace in front of the church offers panoramic views over Braga and the surrounding hills, especially beautiful at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the sanctuary complex, including the staircase, church, and gardens. If you want to ride the funicular and take your time with the views, allocate a half-day. Combine it with a morning or afternoon in central Braga to see the cathedral and old town.
