Benxi City, nestled in the rugged mountains of Liaoning Province, offers a surprising mix of industrial heritage and stunning natural wonders. While known as a steel and coal hub, its real draw for travellers is the dramatic underground world of the Benxi Water Caves and the serene beauty of nearby national parks. This is a place where you can delve deep into karst formations one day and explore historic mountain fortresses the next, all with a fraction of the crowds found elsewhere in China.
Highlights & What to See
- Benxi Water Cave (Benxi Shuidong): A vast subterranean river system navigable by boat, with towering limestone pillars, stalactites, and eerily lit chambers. It's one of Asia's longest water caves and a must-see.
- Guanmenshan National Forest Park: A hiker's paradise of lush valleys, clear streams, and granite peaks. Autumn colours are spectacular, and the park offers well-marked trails for all levels.
- Wulong Lake (Five Dragon Lake): A scenic reservoir surrounded by forested hills, perfect for a peaceful boat ride or lakeside picnic. The water is a vivid turquoise on sunny days.
- Benxi Museum: Housed in a striking modern building, this museum covers the region's geology, industrial history, and Manchu culture. Excellent English labels.
- Pingshan Mountain: A short hike from the city centre leads to a hilltop pagoda with panoramic views over Benxi's industrial valley and surrounding mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal for Benxi. Day one: explore the Benxi Water Cave (allow half a day) and then visit the museum or take a stroll along the river. Day two: head to Guanmenshan National Forest Park for a full day of hiking. If you have a third day, consider a side trip to Wulong Lake or the ancient mountain fortress of Wunu Mountain (Wunu Shancheng) just outside the city.
