Ben Lomond National Park is a wild, windswept plateau in northern Tasmania, offering a starkly beautiful alpine landscape that feels a world away from the coast. The park is crowned by Legges Tor (1572 m), Tasmania's second-highest peak, and its ancient dolerite columns and cushion plants create a lunar-like terrain. In winter, snow transforms the area into a ski destination; in summer, wildflowers bloom and walking trails open up. This is a place for hardy adventurers who love solitude, dramatic views, and a true sense of being on top of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Legges Tor & the Alpine Summit Walk – A moderately challenging 6 km return walk to the summit, with panoramic views over the park and across the Tamar Valley to Bass Strait. The dolerite columns and alpine flora en route are unforgettable.
- Ben Lomond Ski Village – Australia's only ski village accessible by sealed road. Even in summer, the cluster of lodges and the dramatic escarpment make for a striking photo stop.
- Jacobs Ladder – The hairpin gravel road that ascends the escarpment is an adventure in itself. Stop at the lookout for vertiginous views of the valley below.
- Alpine Flora – In summer, look for cushion plants, snow gums, and the endemic Tasmanian waratah. The park is a botanical treasure trove.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, Ben Lomond is a designated Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, the Milky Way is dazzling.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle Ben Lomond as a day trip from Launceston (about 1.5 hours drive). Allow at least 4–5 hours to drive up, do the summit walk, and soak in the views. If you're skiing or want to explore more trails, plan an overnight stay in the ski village or at a nearby lodge. The park is compact but the weather can change fast, so come prepared for all conditions.
