Baucau, Timor-Leste’s second city, is a laid-back coastal escape that rewards travellers who venture east from Dili. With its Portuguese-colonial architecture, sweeping ocean views, and a relaxed, unhurried pace, Baucau feels a world away from the capital. The city is built around a series of hills, offering panoramic vistas of the turquoise Wetar Strait, while its streets are lined with pastel-hued buildings and fragrant frangipani trees. • Baucau Old Town – Wander the atmospheric streets around the central market and cathedral, where colonial-era buildings, including the grand Pousada de Baucau (a former hotel), recall a bygone era.
• Iliomar Beach – A stunning stretch of white sand and clear, calm water, perfect for swimming and picnicking. It’s just a short drive from the city centre and far less crowded than Dili’s beaches.
• Baucau Cathedral (Igreja de São João Baptista) – An imposing whitewashed church with twin bell towers, built in the 1930s and beautifully restored. The interior is simple but serene, with striking stained-glass windows.
• Pousada de Baucau – Even if you’re not staying here, pop in for a drink on the terrace. This former Portuguese inn, with its elegant arches and sea views, is one of the country’s most atmospheric buildings.
• Baucau Market (Pasar Baucau) – A lively morning market where locals sell fresh produce, spices, and handicrafts. It’s a great spot to try local snacks like pastel de nata or fresh coconut.

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Baucau, which allows a full day to explore the town and a morning to relax at Iliomar Beach. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Dili is possible (about 2–3 hours each way), but you’ll appreciate having more time to soak up the atmosphere. Combine Baucau with a visit to the mountainous region of Venilale or the wild beaches of Com for a longer east-coast itinerary.
