Baucau

Baucau, Timor-Leste’s second city, is a laid-back coastal escape that rewards travellers who venture east from Dili. With its Portuguese-colonial architecture, sweeping ocean views, and a relaxed, unhurried pace, Baucau feels a world away from the capital. The city is built around a series of hills, offering panoramic vistas of the turquoise Wetar Strait, while its streets are lined with pastel-hued buildings and fragrant frangipani trees. This is a place to slow down, explore on foot, and soak up a unique blend of Timorese and Portuguese heritage.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Baucau, which allows a full day to explore the town and a morning to relax at Iliomar Beach. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Dili is possible (about 2–3 hours each way), but you’ll appreciate having more time to soak up the atmosphere. Combine Baucau with a visit to the mountainous region of Venilale or the wild beaches of Com for a longer east-coast itinerary.
