Barreal is a quiet, windswept town on the eastern edge of the Andes in San Juan province, Argentina. It’s a magnet for adventure travellers and stargazers, known for its vast, dry landscapes and the nearby El Leoncito National Park. The town itself is a dusty grid of low houses with a central plaza, but its real draw lies in the surrounding desert and mountain scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- El Leoncito National Park – A high-altitude desert park with dramatic red-rock formations, fossil beds, and the El Leoncito Astronomical Complex. Great for hiking, mountain biking, and stargazing.
- Cerro Mercedario – An iconic 6,770 m peak visible from the valley, a serious mountaineering objective for experienced climbers.
- Barreal Dunes – The Médanos de Barreal are sand dunes perfect for sandboarding or simply watching the sunset paint the desert gold.

Use the first day to explore El Leoncito National Park and its trails; the second day for a sandboarding session at the dunes and a drive to Caracoles de Pedernal. If you’re a keen stargazer, stay a third night to take advantage of the exceptionally clear skies. The town is small, so you don’t need more than a few hours to see it.
