Barreal is a quiet, windswept town on the eastern edge of the Andes in San Juan province, Argentina. It’s a magnet for adventure travellers and stargazers, known for its vast, dry landscapes and the nearby El Leoncito National Park. The town itself is a dusty grid of low houses with a central plaza, but its real draw lies in the surrounding desert and mountain scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2 to 3 days in Barreal. Use the first day to explore El Leoncito National Park and its trails; the second day for a sandboarding session at the dunes and a drive to Caracoles de Pedernal. If you’re a keen stargazer, stay a third night to take advantage of the exceptionally clear skies. The town is small, so you don’t need more than a few hours to see it.
