Barraba is a classic country town in the New England region of northern NSW, where wide main streets, historic verandah-post pubs and a strong community spirit set the tone. Surrounded by rolling wheat and sheep country, it’s a place to slow down, chat with locals and soak up authentic outback character.
Highlights & What to See
- Barraba Silo Art – Part of the Australian Silo Art Trail, this towering mural by artist Heesco depicts a local farmer and his dog, capturing the heart of rural life. Best viewed from the nearby park.
- Barraba Museum – Housed in the old School of Arts, this volunteer-run museum overflows with pioneer relics, vintage machinery and photographs that tell the story of the district.
- Mount Kaputar National Park – Just a short drive south, this park offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, lookouts over the plains and excellent walking trails. The drive to the summit is an adventure in itself.
- Gwydir River – A peaceful spot for fishing, kayaking or a riverside picnic. The river is a lifeline for the region and a haven for birdlife.
- Heritage Walk – Stroll along Queen Street to admire well-preserved buildings like the Courthouse (1880s), the Anglican Church and the grand Imperial Hotel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Barraba makes a satisfying stop of 1–2 hours for the silo art and museum, or half a day if you add a riverside walk and lunch at the pub. To explore Mount Kaputar properly, plan a full day or stay overnight in town (there’s a motel and a caravan park). Most visitors pass through on the way between Tamworth and Inverell, so it works well as a lunch break or a base for exploring the national park.
