Balicasag Island, a tiny jewel off the coast of Bohol, is a diver's paradise and one of the Philippines' premier marine sanctuaries. This uninhabited island is ringed by pristine coral reefs and crystal-clear waters, offering some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Visayas. With its powdery white sand beaches and vibrant underwater life, Balicasag feels like a remote tropical escape, yet it's easily accessible from Panglao. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a first-time snorkeler, the island's protected marine reserve promises unforgettable encounters with sea turtles, colorful fish, and stunning coral gardens.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkel the Marine Sanctuary: The protected reef teems with marine life, including hawksbill turtles, clownfish, and schools of jackfish. The calm, clear waters make it ideal for beginners.
- Dive the Balicasag Drop-Off: A steep wall plunging into the deep, covered in soft corals and home to reef sharks, barracudas, and occasional manta rays. Several dive sites, like Black Forest and Dalisay, cater to all levels.
- Sea Turtle Spotting: The island is famous for its resident sea turtles, which glide gracefully through the seagrass beds. Snorkelers frequently encounter them just offshore.
- White Sand Beach: The main beach on the island's eastern side is a postcard-perfect strip of powder-white sand, ideal for relaxing between swims.
- Dolphin Watching (Seasonal): On the boat ride out from Panglao, keep an eye out for pods of spinner dolphins that often play in the Bohol Sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day on Balicasag, arriving early (around 7–8 AM) to beat the crowds and enjoy calm seas. A typical trip includes a boat ride from Panglao (about 30 minutes), followed by two to three hours of snorkeling or diving. If you're diving, you can easily do two dives with a surface interval on the beach. While there are no accommodations on the island, you can linger until early afternoon before heading back to Panglao. For a more relaxed pace, combine Balicasag with a visit to nearby Virgin Island (a sandbar that appears at low tide) for a full day of island hopping.
