Bacalar is a serene lakeside town on the Yucatán Peninsula, famous for the stunning Lagoon of Seven Colors (Laguna de Bacalar). Its calm, crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and deep blue make it a paradise for swimming, kayaking, and sailing. With a laid-back bohemian vibe, Bacalar offers a more peaceful alternative to the Riviera Maya's crowded resorts, while still providing excellent dining and cultural experiences.
Highlights & What to See
- Lagoon of Seven Colors – The star attraction: a vast freshwater lagoon with mesmerizing hues. Swim at the public pier or take a boat tour to the 'Pirate Canal' and the 'Cenote Esmeralda'.
- Cenote Azul – A deep, sapphire-blue sinkhole perfect for a refreshing dip, located just south of town.
- San Felipe Fort (Fuerte de San Felipe) – An 18th-century fortress housing the Museum of the Pirates, offering panoramic lagoon views from its ramparts.
- Los Rápidos – A natural lazy river where you can float along gentle currents surrounded by mangroves.
- Bacalar Pueblo – Stroll the main square (Parque Principal) and browse artisan shops, then sample local Yucatecan cuisine at a waterfront restaurant.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days in Bacalar, which allows for a full day on the lagoon and another to explore the fort and cenotes. If you're short on time, a single overnight can still capture the lagoon's beauty with a morning swim and sunset sail. For a relaxed pace, extend to 4 days and include a day trip to the nearby Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
