Areuse Gorge
Cutting a dramatic limestone chasm through the Jura Mountains, Areuse Gorge (Gorges de l'Areuse) is one of Switzerland's most spectacular yet under-the-radar natural wonders. The turquoise river has carved a narrow, 300-metre-deep canyon over millennia, creating a landscape of sheer cliffs, mossy boulders, and thundering waterfalls. This is a place where you can feel the raw power of water and geology, all within an easy day trip from Neuchâtel. The well-marked trail along the gorge offers a thrilling, immersive experience that feels like stepping into a lost world.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Trail (Sentier des Gorges): A 5.5-km path clinging to the cliffs, with tunnels, bridges, and staircases carved into the rock. You'll walk right beside the roaring Areuse River, passing deep pools and cascading waterfalls.
- Le Saut de la Saule: A dramatic 30-metre waterfall that plunges into a dark, emerald pool. The spray and thunderous sound make it a highlight of the hike.
- Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge): A narrow stone bridge spanning the gorge at its narrowest point. The views up and down the canyon are breathtaking.
- Château de Boudry: A medieval castle perched on a hill above the gorge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and the Areuse Valley. The castle houses a small wine museum.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for alpine choughs, peregrine falcons, and even ibex on the cliffs above. The gorge is also home to rare plants like the yellow saxifrage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day to a full day to explore the gorge properly. The main trail takes about 2.5–3 hours one way (from Noiraigue to Boudry or vice versa), but you'll want extra time to stop, take photos, and soak in the scenery. If you're short on time, you can walk just the most scenic section between Noiraigue and the Pont du Diable (about 1.5 hours round trip). Combine your visit with a picnic by the river or a meal at one of the rustic restaurants in Boudry or Noiraigue. The trail is well-maintained but can be slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes are essential.
