Araripina, a lively town in the heart of the Northern Rivers hinterland, is a gateway to dramatic gorges and rich Indigenous culture. Its red-earth landscapes and relaxed café scene make it a rewarding detour off the Pacific Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Araripina Gorge: A spectacular sandstone canyon carved by ancient rivers, with walking trails that wind past towering cliffs and seasonal waterfalls. The rim walk offers panoramic views over the valley.
- Bundjalung National Park: Just east of town, this protected area shelters coastal heath and rainforest. Look for wallabies at dawn and listen for lyrebirds in the gullies.
- Araripina Regional Gallery: Housed in a restored 1920s butter factory, the gallery showcases contemporary works by local artists and a permanent collection of Bundjalung artefacts.
- Old Butter Factory Café: A beloved pit stop for excellent flat whites and homemade scones, set in a shady garden. Try the bush-tucker-inspired jam.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal: spend the first day exploring the gorge and town, the second day in Bundjalung National Park, and use a third morning to visit nearby villages or the coast. If you’re short on time, a single day can cover the gorge walk, gallery, and a café lunch.
