The Alpine Way is one of Australia's most spectacular alpine drives, winding 118 km through the heart of the Snowy Mountains from Jindabyne to Khancoban. This sealed road cuts through Kosciuszko National Park, offering jaw-dropping views of snow-gum forests, granite peaks, and glacial lakes. In winter, the route is your ticket to Australia’s best ski fields; in summer, it’s a gateway to world-class hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing. Expect hairpin bends, sudden weather changes, and wildlife crossings – this is a drive that demands your full attention but rewards you with pure alpine magic.
Highlights & What to See
- Kosciuszko National Park – Australia’s highest national park, home to Mount Kosciuszko and vast alpine wilderness.
- Thredbo – A year-round alpine village with ski slopes in winter, a scenic chairlift to the top of Mount Kosciuszko in summer, and excellent mountain-biking trails.
- Charlotte Pass – The highest resort in Australia, offering a quieter ski experience and access to the Kosciuszko Walk.
- Dead Horse Gap – A dramatic lookout point at 1,580 m, with panoramic views of the Main Range and the chance to spot wild brumbies.
- Tom Groggin – A historic cattlemen’s hut and a great spot for a picnic by the Murray River, with walking trails and trout fishing.
- Khancoban – The western gateway, with a scenic lake, visitor centre, and the start of the Murray River Trail.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to drive the Alpine Way with stops, or better, two days to explore side trips. In winter, the drive takes longer due to snow and ice – check road closures and carry chains. Summer offers the best conditions for hiking detours, such as a walk to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko from Thredbo (half-day). If you’re skiing, base yourself in Thredbo or Perisher for a long weekend; the Alpine Way is your scenic commute.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jindabyne – A lakeside town with accommodation, dining, and water sports, perfect as a base before or after the drive.
- Perisher Valley – Australia’s largest ski resort, accessible via the Alpine Way in winter.
- Snowy Mountains Scheme – Visit the engineering marvel of the Snowy Hydro discovery centre in Cooma or tour the Tumut 2 Power Station.
- Khancoban to Corryong – Continue west into Victoria’s Upper Murray region, with historic towns and the Murray River.
- Yarrangobilly Caves – A detour north of the Alpine Way to see limestone caves and a thermal pool.
- Mount Kosciuszko – Australia’s highest peak, best accessed from Thredbo via the Kosciuszko Walk.
