Stretching across the roof of Victoria, Alpine National Park is a sprawling wilderness of snow-capped peaks, wildflower-strewn meadows, and crystal-clear streams. This is Australia’s high country, where the air is thin and the views go on forever. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, a mountain biker, or simply someone who craves solitude among ancient snow gums, this park delivers an authentic alpine experience far removed from the coastal crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Bogong: Victoria’s highest peak (1986 m) is a rite of passage for bushwalkers. The summit views over the Kiewa Valley and across to the Snowy Mountains are breathtaking.
- The Razorback & Viking Circuit: A classic multi-day hike that traverses knife-edge ridges and offers a true wilderness experience. Best attempted in summer or autumn.
- Falls Creek & Mount Hotham: In winter, these resorts are ski hubs; in summer, they’re launchpads for mountain biking, hiking, and scenic chairlift rides.
- Davies Plain & the Snowy River: Remote and rugged, this area offers 4WD tracks, river crossings, and a sense of isolation that’s hard to beat.
- Wildflowers in Spring: From November to January, the high plains erupt with billy buttons, snow daisies, and alpine grevilleas – a photographer’s dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the park’s scale, plan for at least two to three days. A long weekend allows you to tackle a major hike like the Mount Bogong summit or a section of the Victorian Alps Walking Track. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Bright or Mansfield can give you a taste – drive the Great Alpine Road, stop at scenic lookouts, and take a short walk to a waterfall. For a deeper immersion, consider a five-day circuit that combines the Razorback and the Cobberas.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Omeo: A historic gold-rush town on the eastern edge, with heritage buildings and access to the remote Cobberas region.
- Snowy River National Park: Adjacent to the east, this park offers dramatic gorges, river rafting, and the iconic Little River Gorge.
