Almeida
Almeida is a fortified village in Portugal's Beira Alta region, near the Spanish border. Its star-shaped walls, built in the 17th century, are among the finest examples of Vauban-style fortifications in Europe. Wandering through its underground tunnels and climbing the ramparts offers a vivid sense of history, while the quiet streets and local cafés provide a relaxed, authentic Portuguese experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Fortress Walls & Gates: Walk the complete circuit of the star-shaped ramparts, with 12 bastions and two monumental gates – the Portas de São Francisco and Portas de Santo António. The views across the plains are superb.
- Underground Galleries: Explore the network of tunnels (galerias) that once allowed soldiers to move secretly between bastions. A fascinating glimpse into military engineering.
- Castelo de Almeida: The medieval castle keep within the fortress, now housing a small museum on the region's history and the 1810 Siege of Almeida.
- Igreja Matriz de Almeida: The main church, with a striking baroque interior and a notable altarpiece.
- Picaria Fountain: A 17th-century fountain with ornate stonework, located near the main square.
