Rising from the misty mountains of central Taiwan, Alishan is a place of ethereal beauty, where ancient cypress forests, narrow-gauge railways, and sea-of-cloud sunrises create an almost mythical landscape. This national scenic area is a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively—offering a cool retreat from Taiwan's subtropical lowlands. Whether you arrive on the historic Alishan Forest Railway or via a winding mountain road, the journey is part of the magic. Here, you can hike among giants, sip high-mountain oolong tea, and watch the sun paint the sky above a carpet of clouds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate at least two days and one night—arrive in the afternoon, explore the forest trails and sunset spots, then rise early for the sunrise and a morning hike before departing. If you're short on time, a single very early day trip from Chiayi is possible (allow 4–5 hours on-site), but you'll miss the ethereal dawn atmosphere. For hikers, three days let you explore deeper trails like the Tashan Summit or the Fenqihu area.
