Nestled in the rolling hills of the Riverina region, Adelong is a tiny gold-rush town with a big story. Its main street, lined with heritage buildings and a handful of characterful pubs, feels like a living museum. The real draw, though, is the surrounding countryside: golden paddocks, eucalypt forests, and the winding Adelong Creek. This is a place to slow down, chat with locals, and soak up the quiet beauty of inland New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Adelong Falls Gold Workings – A must-see: this historic reserve preserves the remains of a 19th-century gold sluicing operation. Follow the walking track past water races, puddling machines, and the dramatic waterfall.
- Heritage Walk – Stroll Adelong’s main street to spot the 1860s Courthouse, the Star Hotel (still serving cold beer), and the old post office. Interpretive signs explain the town’s gold-rush heyday.
- Adelong Creek – Perfect for a picnic or a paddle. The creek is lined with shady spots and is popular for gold-panning (try your luck with a pan from the local visitors’ centre).
- Museum in the Old School – Housed in a former school building, this small museum has a fascinating collection of mining artefacts, photographs, and local memorabilia.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can cover Adelong’s main attractions in half a day – the heritage walk and falls take about 2–3 hours. If you want to bushwalk or pan for gold, allow a full day. Most visitors treat it as a pleasant stopover en route to the Snowy Mountains or the Riverina wine region.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Batlow – Famous for its apples and orchards; visit in autumn for harvest festivals or just to pick your own fruit.
- Yarrangobilly Caves – Part of Kosciuszko National Park, these limestone caves offer guided tours and a thermal pool – about 45 minutes south-east.
- Wagga Wagga – An hour north-west; the Riverina’s largest city, with galleries, gardens, and the sprawling Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens.
- Snowy Mountains – About 1.5 hours south; in winter, ski at Thredbo or Perisher; in summer, hike and bike in the high country.
