Straddling the roof of Australia, Kosciuszko National Park is a vast alpine wilderness that surprises everyone who ventures here. This is the land of snow gums, wild rivers, and Australia's highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko. Whether you're skiing in winter or hiking wildflower-strewn trails in summer, the park offers a rare taste of the high country that feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk – The classic 13 km return hike from Charlotte Pass to the continent's highest point. Easy gradients and sweeping views make this a must-do for walkers of all abilities.
- Main Range Walk – A more challenging 22 km circuit that takes in glacial lakes, granite outcrops, and the full alpine spectacle. Best tackled over two days with an overnight at Seaman's Hut.
- Thredbo & Perisher – Australia's premier ski resorts offer winter sports from June to October, plus scenic chairlift rides in summer for panoramic views.
- Yarrangobilly Caves – A network of limestone caves with guided tours through cathedral-like chambers, plus a thermal pool for a soak afterwards.
- Snowy Mountains Scheme – Visit the historic hydro-electric tunnels and the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma to understand the engineering feat that shaped the region.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for the rare corroboree frog, brumbies (wild horses), and the iconic snow gum trees with their twisted, colourful bark.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the park's diversity, plan at least three days: one for the summit walk, one for exploring caves or a scenic drive, and one to enjoy the alpine village atmosphere. If you're short on time, a full day can cover the summit walk and a quick visit to Thredbo. In winter, allow extra days for skiing or snowplay.
