Yanchep National Park
Just 45 minutes north of Perth, Yanchep National Park is a blissful pocket of bushland where the Swan Coastal Plain meets the Indian Ocean. Here, limestone caves burrow beneath banksia woodlands, koalas doze in eucalypts, and wetlands teem with birdlife. It’s an easy, rewarding escape that blends nature, history, and Indigenous culture into one compact package.
Highlights & What to See
- Crystal Cave & Loch Cave – Join a guided tour into these dazzling limestone caverns, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Crystal Cave is the most accessible, while Loch Cave offers a more adventurous descent.
- Koala Boardwalk – Spot the park’s resident koalas snoozing in the treetops. The boardwalk also offers excellent birdwatching – look for red-tailed black cockatoos and western rosellas.
- Yanchep Lagoon – A protected swimming beach with calm, turquoise waters, perfect for a refreshing dip or a picnic on the grass.
- Aboriginal Cultural Tours – Walk with a Noongar guide through the bush, learning about traditional uses of plants, Dreamtime stories, and the significance of the caves.
- Ghost House & Moolarben Homestead – Peek into the park’s colonial past at these historic stone buildings, set amid peaceful gardens.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the park’s main sights – take a cave tour, stroll the koala boardwalk, and enjoy a picnic by the lagoon. If you’re keen on a longer walk (the 2.5-hour Yanchep Heritage Trail loops through caves, wetlands, and coastline), set aside a full day. Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially on weekends.
