Dampier is a rugged port town on Western Australia's remote Pilbara coast, best known as the gateway to the magnificent Dampier Archipelago. With its deep-red earth, turquoise waters, and a palpable sense of frontier history, it offers a raw, untamed beauty that captivates travellers seeking an authentic outback-by-the-sea experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Dampier Archipelago – Explore over 40 islands teeming with wildlife, ancient Aboriginal rock art, and world-class fishing. Take a boat tour to see sea turtles, dugongs, and humpback whales (June–October).
- Murujuga National Park – Home to one of the world's largest collections of petroglyphs, some up to 40,000 years old. The Ngajarli (Deep Gorge) boardwalk offers an easy walk past hundreds of carvings.
- Red Dog's Statue – Pay homage to the legendary kelpie immortalised in film and folklore; his statue overlooks the harbour and is a beloved photo stop.
- Hearson's Cove – A stunning, shallow bay perfect for swimming and picnicking. At low tide, the famous 'Staircase to the Moon' phenomenon occurs from March to October.
- Karratha – Just 20 km east, this bustling regional hub has excellent cafés, galleries, and the Karratha Visitor Centre for local tips.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stay 1–2 days to explore Murujuga and take a half-day archipelago cruise. If you're keen on fishing or snorkelling, allow an extra day. Dampier is compact; you can see the town's main sights in a few hours, then focus on the national park and islands. Consider overnighting in Karratha for more accommodation and dining options.
